30/09/16 Dance Lesson Analysis

Following the research that myself and Izzy did last lesson, we started to choreograph a duet routine with the stimulus of the Katie Hopkins quote we found. We looked deeper into it and started analysing the different feelings of both Katie Hopkins, and people with black ethnicity. It is obvious from the way the tweet is written that Katie Hopkins felt angered at the fact that people believe that there aren't equal rights, and that she feels that everything is equal, but many other people don't believe this and we often see news stories revolving around gun crimes aimed towards people with black ethnicity, particularly in America. Myself and Izzy felt that this showed that Katie Hopkins was shallow, and was controlling what society should think because of her power on social media and we therefore came up with the idea of puppetry and making it look like one of us is controlling the other.

After discussing this we began choreographing our piece. We started by facing each other and sitting on the floor with our legs bent in front of us, and holding our knees. We chose this position because we felt that it looked neutral and it would leave the audience wondering who was going to be in control, which links to the theme of media in terms of the confusion. We continued choreographing and thought about how we could portray the idea of opposites and made a decision to perform some movements in the opposite direction.

After the first half of the lesson we had choreographed one minute, and we felt that we could now contribute ideas to the group piece we were to begin working on. We then joined the rest of the class and worked on a group dance with the same stimulus of media, and the theme of how it can control people, and the lies it tells. We started choreographing movement to spoken word. We all stood still facing different direction, and Izzy said the first line whilst two people moved. Everyone then stood still again, and I said the second line and the two people moved again. Then when the third line was said we all moved in unison, the same movement from last week's motif where we stepped forward, covered our mouth with our right hand and did a side lunge to the left. I felt that this was effective because it showed the manipulation of the media and that it started with two people hearing something and then everyone joined in in what they thought was true, and this shows manipulation.

To improve from this lesson I would have liked to have explored more contact movements with Izzy, by one of us physically control the other using their hands, as well as the puppetry we explored. I feel that by doing this we would achieve the idea of looking into manipulation and it would have made the theme clearer.
